Undergraduate Awards & Scholarships

Undergraduate Awards & Scholarships

OSU offers scholarships for first-year and transfer students to recognize academic achievement while promoting the diversity necessary to achieve the university's educational goals. These include the Presidential Scholarship, Provost Scholarship and the Diversity Achievement Scholarship.

A scholarship application form is a component of the application for undergraduate admission. The chemistry department of College of Science does not accept applications or directly award scholarships to new students.

Information about general OSU scholarships and financial aid can be found on the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office Website.

The Oregon Student Assistance Commission has a variety of scholarship programs available for high school seniors, undergraduate students and graduate students.

Undergraduate scholarships

The College of Science awards their own scholarships. For additional information, visit the College of Science Scholarships webpage, which includes a list of the available scholarships and the application form. These scholarships are directed at students who are currently enrolled at OSU and are awarded for the student's second or later year of attendance at OSU. Continuing students are defined as students who have completed a minimum of 30 hours of coursework at OSU by the end of winter term when the application is made for the scholarship for the following year.

The Department of Chemistry also has a number of scholarships for continuing students. These one-year scholarships are reserved specifically for outstanding chemistry majors, requiring a GPA of 3.5 unless otherwise noted.

Given to chemistry students to help support them through their academic studies.

Intended for a chemistry major in good standing who has expressed an interest in a career in industry or a startup.

To juniors or seniors in the Department of Chemistry with at least a 3.0 GPA. Peter B. Culter (OSU '59) was the first scientist to detect radiation over the US from the Chernobyl reactor explosion and contributed to the use of radiation physics in the detection of rare birth defects. This scholarship was established by Mr. Culter’s family to commemorate his life.

Awarded to second or third-year students who reside in the United States. This scholarship is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to one or more undergraduate students majoring in Chemistry in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in Chemistry. Recipients must be residents of the United States, enrolled as full-time students in the College of Science with either junior or senior standing in Chemistry while receiving the scholarship, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0. The scholarship is renewable for one year provided the recipient continues to be enrolled full-time in the College of Science, maintains a cumulative GPA of not less than 3.0, and notifies the Honors and Awards Committee of their desire that the renewal be granted. Special consideration is given to students who have financial need.

Established in honor of Carroll DeKock, a member of the Department for more than 30 years, chair for 14 years, and inspirational teacher in the general chemistry program until his retirement in Spring 1999.

Awarded to first- and second-year students. The Carroll W. and Gerry A. DeKock Scholarship is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to one or more undergraduate students majoring in Chemistry in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in Chemistry. The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student in the College of Science with either sophomore or junior standing in chemistry while receiving the scholarship and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater. Financial need may be considered, but is not a requirement.

Awarded to third-year students. This scholarship is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to an undergraduate student majoring in Chemistry in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in Chemistry and potential for success in post-graduate studies and/or a career in chemistry. The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student in the College of Science with senior standing while receiving the scholarship and have a cumulative GPA of not less than 3.5. Previous recipients will be considered if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Established by Colleen Spurgeon (BS '84) who was also a scholarship recipient.

Awarded to first, second or third-year students. The Colleen Spurgeon Scholarship is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to an undergraduate student majoring in Chemistry in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in chemistry. The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student in the College of Science and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater.

Awarded to first, second, or third-year chemistry majors with the Chemistry Education option.

The ACS-Hach Land Grant Undergraduate Chemistry Teacher Scholarship is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to one or more undergraduate students majoring in Chemistry with the Chemistry Education option in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement. Recipients must be citizens of the United States or permanent residents enrolled as full-time Chemistry majors that express an interest in becoming a High School chemistry teacher, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater. Students are selected on the bases of chemistry aptitude, interest, and need. The scholarship is renewed annually provided the recipient continues to be enrolled full-time as a chemistry major, maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater, and applies for renewal. Undergraduate students are limited to three one-year awards. A special one-year renewal is available to students enrolled full-time in the OSU MS in Science Education program provided they maintain a GPA of 3.0 greater and apply for renewal. Financial need may be considered, but is not a requirement.

To honor the memory of Keith McKennon a scholarship for undergraduate students majoring in Chemistry with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

For a chemistry student going into their junior year, who has been a full-time student at OSU the previous year. Preference is given to students with demonstrated financial need, who can benefit from reducing the need to work to focus on scholarship and possibly research in their upper-division years. This scholarship was established by Dr. Ingle's family and has received support from his former students.

Jack Stephenson created this scholarship in honor of his father, who spent time in Oregon just before WWI. His father told him wonderful stories about Oregon. When Jack graduated from UW Madison and was looking at graduate programs in Chemistry, he opted for OSU. Jack and Charlene met at OSU, and although he was drafted after his first year at OSU, he was able to come back and complete his PhD after two years of Army service. Jack went to work for the CIA after graduation. Among other programs, he was involved with the K-129 submarine recovery project. Jack and Charlene moved back from DC after he retired.

Formerly the Dorothy and Ramon Barnes Chemistry Scholarship Fund, this fund is to be used to support scholarships for students in the Department of Chemistry with financial need, giving preference to women.

Ramon and Dorothy are both emeritus faculty at U Mass. Ramon received his degree at OSU in 1962.

Provides scholarship funds for students in Chemistry, with preference to students who are residents of Oregon.

Jeff received his UG degree from OSU in 1971 and an MS in 1989.

Undergraduate awards

Awarded to the top achieving undergrad in the general chemistry sequence and the Honors general chemistry sequence. The Honors and Awards committee calls upon faculty involved in CH 23x series via email for nominations during the middle of spring term. The committee makes recommendations to the department chair. These awards are presented at the spring awards ceremony put on by the Department of Chemistry.

This award is based on performance in CH 334-336 and CH 361-362. The winner receives a lifetime membership in the National Honorary Chemical Society, Phi Lambda Upsilon.

The WIC Culture of Writing Award was created to recognize and value excellence in student writing and is awarded to a student who produces a particularly outstanding paper in a WIC course that demonstrates the principles and practices of writing as a professional chemist.

This annual award recognizes the importance of scientific writing, particularly in each term of the Writing Intensive Courses that are Experimental Chemistry II (CH 462, CH 463, and CH 464) in the Integrated Lab Series at OSU Chemistry. One paper in each course is selected that best demonstrates the student’s ability to compose a professional paper of at least 2000 words through multiple aspects of writing, including brainstorming, drafting and revising. Each award includes an honorarium from the chemistry department and the top awardee is also recognized with the OSU Culture of Writing Award. Awards are selected by the course instructors and are announced at the annual Chemistry Honors & Awards event each spring.
