Undergraduate Student Life

A controlled small fiery explosion during a chemistry experiment.

Welcome to Chemistry!

To help our majors get off to a strong start, we offer a first-year chemistry orientation course, Careers in Chemistry (CH 220, 1 cr), and for transfer students, Transferable Professional and Scientific Skills for Chemists (CH 320X, 1 cr). Both courses link new chemistry majors with experienced peer mentors, including discussions with chemistry researchers and graduate students, to explore real world opportunities in science. Also we offer a select section of general chemistry lab, CH 271, just for chemistry majors to help you network with other chemistry majors.

Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society

Our Chemistry Club, or SAACS, is all about having fun with chemistry while gaining a greater understanding of science and exploring the mysteries of chemistry. If you are interested in chemistry, or just like blowing things up and lighting things on fire, then the Chemistry Club just might be what you are looking for.

Triple Point

Whatever phase of your education you're in, you're welcome. The Triple Point is a resource for Undergraduate Chemistry students. A quiet study space to connect with other undergraduates studying chemistry. The Triple Point is located in Gilbert 018 and is open all hours that Gilbert Hall is open.

Student Resources

Oregon State provides numerous student resources, covering student well-being to career development and academic support. Our department has also collected a list of relevant information to help new and transferring chemistry majors succeed.

Support for students of color and LGBTQ students

Trio Student Support Services (TRiO SSS) is a support program for undergraduate students that are first-generation, low-income, or have documented disabilities. The program provides academic counseling, tutoring and peer mentorship, social enrichment opportunities and more.

The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is dedicated to increasing the number of traditionally underrepresented students successfully completing science, technology, engineering and mathematics baccalaureate degrees.

SOL: LGBTQ+ Multicultural Support is an inclusive, welcoming community with events, educational programming and student advocacy and support for queer/trans people of color.

Finding life balance

The College of Science strives to promote a healthy student community, especially among first-year students who may be struggling to find their place on campus. OSU offers many resources to help build a healthy community for its students, including outreach programs for a variety of college health issues. Many of the programs target the most common concerns and interests facing college students.

Remember that you are not alone! There are many people here to help.
