ENRICHMENT AND GATEWAY EXPERIENCES

FOR UNDERGRADUATES IN CHEMISTRY

The chemistry department offers many possibilities for students to obtain experience outside the normal classroom setting. These experiences include:

1. undergraduate research with a chemistry professor

about 2/3 of majors enroll in CH 401 or CH 403

2. formal presentation of undergraduate research results

e.g., Departmental, Honors, International Degree program

! poster or oral presentation at conferences

e.g., Northwest Regional meeting of the American Chemical Society and the Oregon Academy of Sciences.

program expanded this Spring term to students outside of CH 463

3. internships (off campus)and on campus work experience external to the department

e.g., our students work at Antivirals, Inc. (now AVI, Inc.), CH2MHill, Synthetec, the departments of Botany, Food Science,Vet Med, and the Linus Pauling Institute

Develop a formal internship program with Oregon Industries

4. organizations and societies

local chapters of Phi Lambda Upsilon, The National Chemistry Honor Society, and Iota Sigma PI, The Women's National Honor Society in Chemistry; Mortar Board Society; SAACS

5. outreach activities
