My current research concerns synthesis of new specialty polymers with desirable properties for manufacturing. Most of the emphasis has been on polybenzimidazoles (PBIs), a type of polymer that is currently used for flame retardant fabric or spacecraft parts that need to withstand very high temperature conditions. Our work is concerned with preparing new PBIs which would not necessarily have as much high temperature stability, but would have much more desirable handing characteristics which would allow them to be used in different applications.

In our recent work, three syntheses of PBIs have been developed that produce polybenzimidazoles (PBIs) with flexible linkages (e.g., -O-, -SO2-, -CMe2-) . Bisphenol A (BPA) was reacted in DMAC/K2CO3 with the unusual benzothiadiazole 1 or with 5-chloro-2-nitro-aniline, 2, to give intermediates which when reduced gave monomer 3. Reaction of 3 with aromatic dialdehydes in DMF/O2 yielded PBI (e.g., Y= -O-C6H4-CMe2-C6H4-O-, and Z= -C6H4-). Alternatively, reaction of 3,3'-diaminobenzidine (DAB) with p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, 4, in DMF/O2 produces 5 which can be reacted with 6 in DMAC/K2CO3 to produce PBI (Y=nil, Z=-C6H4-SO2-C6H4-).

Further creative chemistry is being explored to generate new monomers and several variations of the polymerization process are being examined to improve the known methods and adapt them to the needs of the proposed new monomers.
