Course fees

Fees are non-refundable and subject to change, by term or year and without notice. All chemistry labs are charged a Course Fee as listed on the Course Catalog; the University sets this fee.

In addition to the course fee, if you are given any of the below items for your lab, your student account will be updated with the corresponding supply charge.

If you have broken any glassware, you will be charged no more than $10.00 per item broken.

At the end of the term, you are required to check out. If you do not check out, you will be charged a $45.00 late charge and a $10.00 key replacement charge. If you have any missing or broken glassware you will also be charged for that.

You are given a key to your locker at the beginning of the term. If you do not return the key during lab checkout, you will be charged $10.00

Placement of students in chemistry

Little or no high school chemistry and concurrent enrollment in MTH 095 Intermediate Algebra (3 cr) or MTH 103 Algebraic Reasoning (4 cr) or higher

  • CH 121 General Chemistry (5cr).
  • A more gradual and thorough approach in the CH 121, CH 122, CH 123 sequence will prepare some students to take an advanced chemistry course such as CH 331.

Students who do not place in MTH 095 Intermediate Algebra (3cr) or MTH 103 Algebraic Reasoning (4 cr) should first complete MTH 075 Variables and Linear Equations (4 cr) with a C or better

  • CH 121 General Chemistry (5 cr) concurrently with MTH 095 Intermediate Algebra (3 cr) or MTH 103 Algebraic Reasoning (4 cr)

Students without high school chemistry but who have AP credit or placement in MTH 251 Differential Calculus (4 cr) or higher.
Or At least one year of high school chemistry and completion of MTH 111 or higher. Or concurrent enrollment in MTH 111 or placement in MTH 112 or higher
For best success, the Chemistry Department suggests: SATM (490) or ACTM (20) or MPAL (60)

  • Engineering students other than listed in D below: CH 201 Chemistry for Engineering Majors (3 cr)
  • Engineering students may want to take the optional CH 211 Recitation for Chemistry 201 (1 cr)
  • Other students: CH 231 General Chemistry (4 cr) and CH 261 Laboratory for Chemistry 231 (1 cr)
  • The complete sequence includes:
CH 232 General Chemistry (4 cr) and CH 262 Laboratory for Chemistry 232 (1 cr) and
CH 233 General Chemistry (4 cr) and CH 263 Laboratory for Chemistry 233 (1 cr)

Science, bioengineering, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, and pre-medical/pre-dental/pre-pharmacy students and other students interested in a complete general chemistry sequence will require:
At least one year of high school chemistry and completion of MTH 111 or higher or concurrent enrollment in MTH 111 or placement in MTH 112 or higher.
For best success, the chemistry department suggests: SATM (490) or ACTM (20) or MPAL (60)

  • CH 231 General Chemistry (4 cr) and CH 261 Laboratory for Chemistry 231 (1 cr)
  • The complete sequence includes:
CH 232 General Chemistry (4 cr) and CH 262 Laboratory for Chemistry 232 (1 cr) and
  • CH 233 General Chemistry (4 cr) and CH 263 Laboratory for Chemistry 233 (1 cr)

Students in the University Honors College and at least one year of high school chemistry and Completion of MTH 111 or higher or concurrent enrollment in MTH 111 or placement in MTH 112 or higher.
For best success, the Chemistry Department suggests: SATM (490) or ACTM (20) or MPAL (60)

  • CH 231H Honors General Chemistry (4 cr) and CH 261H Laboratory for Chemistry 231H
  • The complete sequence for these students also includes:

CH 233H Honors General Chemistry (4 cr) and CH 263H Laboratory for Chemistry 233H

Withdrawing from a course

Students may withdraw from a course with a W grade after the tenth day of classes and through the end of the seventh week of classes. After the seventh week of classes, students are expected to complete the program attempted and will receive letter grades (A, B, C, D, F, I, S, U, P, N) for all courses in which enrolled unless they officially withdraw from the university. Procedures for withdrawal from individual courses are outlined in the term Schedule of Classes.

How to withdraw from a course

On the OSU Web Registration system, course withdrawals are done on the "Register/Add/Drop Classes" page. This is located on your MyOSU Page under the "Student" tab.

Course drops processed after the end of registration, Friday of the second week of classes, are considered course withdrawals and result in W grades. Course Withdrawals are considered changes to a registration, and as such will be assessed the $10.00 Change of Registration fee as specified under "Late Registration, Change of Registration Fees."

Additionally, if you are withdrawing from a lab course, lab fees are largely non-refundable.
